Ali Pasha was the ruler in the Ottoman era in Ioannina for 33 years , a controversial personality in accordance with researchers and historians. One of the acts for which there is nothing standing is Euphrosyne and 16 other women's drowning in the lake .
Beyond the mythology that surrounds the supposed relationship with Mukhtar Pasha, Ali's son, Euphrosyne or Kyra Frosini, was the wife of a merchant and a mother of two children who caused with her clothing, fiestas, her friends and the independence of a new ethos in Ioannina ; An ethos of "European", which could not be accepted neither by the city as a whole (hence the subsequent silence) nor by Ali Pasha.
It is said that Ali Pasha who was tortured by remorse, had no intention to kill them and therefore expected a relative representation of elders who would ask him to save their lives. But nothing. Three days passed and there was no sign of salvation. Eventually, Ali Pasha took the decision to kill them. Women's death was tragic. When night fell, the women were put in closed bags, placed in a boat and drowned in the lake Pamvotis.
It is worth to note that only one husband asked for his wife to be released, he took her and left.
Much for Euphrosyne have been written, but nothing for other women.
They were sixteen women which were considered of questionable morals. They were sixteen wives, daughters, sisters, mothers.........
