One of the most characteristic villages of Mani is that of Vathia (also Vatheia). It is located on top of a hill overlooking the blue sea and the sunset. The two and three storey imposing towers of Mani are a priceless architectural treasure for our country. Together with other stone buildings of the village they create a real fortress - the guardian of the region.
The settlement was created after the 18th century and it was full of life in the 19th century. In the early decades of this century the exodus to the big cities begun and in 1980 there were just a few residents left, mainly older women, and Vathia was an abandoned settlement. After 1980 the GNTO ( Greek National Tourism Organization) restored most towers and formed them into guesthouses.

Ενας από τους πιο χαρακτηριστικούς οικισμούς της Μάνης είναι αυτός της Βάθειας. Στην κορυφή ενός υψώματος αγναντεύει την γαλάζια θάλασσα και το ηλιοβασίλεμα.Οι διώροφοι και τριώροφοι επιβλητικοί μανιάτικοι πύργοι αποτελούν έναν ανεκτίμητο αρχιτεκτονικό θησαυρό για τον τόπο μας. Μαζί με τα υπόλοιπα πετρόχτιστα κτίσματα του οικισμού δημιουργούν ένα πραγματικό οχυρό - φύλακα της περιοχής.
Ο οικισμός διαμορφώθηκε μετά τον 18ο αιώνα και έσφυζε από ζωή το 19ο αιώνα. Στις πρώτες δεκαετίες του αιώνα μας άρχισε η φυγή προς τις μεγάλες πόλεις και το 1980 είχαν απομείνει ελάχιστοι κάτοικοι κυρίως ηλικιωμένες γυναίκες και η Βάθεια ήταν ένας εγκατελελειμμένος οικισμός.. Μετά το 1980 ο ΕΟΤ αναστήλωσε τους περισσότερους πύργους και τους διαμόρφωσε σε ξενώνες.
